How can a question about an alerted bid ever compromise our rights?

It might if we play X as showing a strong hand.

One treatment of 2s can be a relay based on (usually) either a wto in an
unspecified minor or a weakish 10/11hcp raise to 2n. Since I want a S lead
double looks standout but I don't think that a question about their methods
beforehand would compromise our side.

Only your side is vulnerable. LHO deals and opens 1NT, Announced as 11-14
points. Partner passes. RHO bids 2S, which is Alerted. You hold:

KQJT63
Q963
2
94

What call do you make?

Best wishes,
